Volkswagen will lift the covers on the ID.2X at the Munich Motor Show – a new small electric SUV that’s set to slot in beneath the ID.3.

Officially described as a “near-production concept”, the ID.2X won’t stay as a design study for long. The finished version is due to hit the road next year, and VW has released fresh teaser sketches showing off its chunky stance and bold styling.

As the name suggests, the newcomer is a tougher, higher-riding sibling to the ID.2 supermini, which is also making its debut at Munich. Expect the ID.2X to be VW’s zero-emission answer to the T-Cross, and a direct rival for the upcoming Renault 4 E-Tech and Ford Puma Gen-E.

Prices are expected to start from around £25,000, pitching it neatly between the £20k ID.2 supermini and mainstream family EVs. That makes it a crucial car for Volkswagen as it pushes affordable electric models into the mainstream.

The sketches suggest a design language that mixes the familiar with the futuristic: short overhangs, pronounced wheelarches, and a wide stance give it a squat, confident look. An upright nose adds attitude, while the rear sports a light-up VW badge and three-slat pillar detailing reminiscent of the ID. Buzz.

Under the skin, the ID.2X will share its MEB Entry platform with the ID.2, Cupra Raval and Skoda Epiq. Battery options are expected to include 38kWh and 58kWh packs, with the latter offering up to 280 miles of range. Rapid charging at 125kW should mean a 10–80% top-up in under 30 minutes.

Volkswagen’s push into affordable EVs is starting to gather real momentum. Alongside the ID.2 twins, Cupra and Skoda will also launch their own takes on the same hardware, while the ID.Every1 city car will follow in 2027 at under £18,000.
