Wraps finally off Renault's reborn 4

Renault has finally pulled the wraps of its latest retro styled electric car. This time it harks back to the classic 4, which went out of production three decades ago after 8 million had been built.

The 4EVER Trophy show car paves the way for an all-electric supermini-sized SUV that will join the Renault line-up in 2025.

Like the Renault 5, it will be made using the new small platform for B-segment electric vehicles which will also be shared with the new Nissan Micra. Renault claims this platform will guarantee the best performance in terms of range, acoustics, and on-road behaviour, without compromising on the design.

The company says the new 4 won’t be a stripped out ‘economy’ model like the classic 4. Instead, the Renault 5 and Renault 4 will be like the Clio and Captur, with the 4 being more SUV-shaped.

At 4.16m long, the new 4 is smaller than most superminis, and is powered by a 139BHP electric motor and a 42kWh lithium-ion battery. No range or performance figures have been provided.

The 4EVER Trophy show car becomes Renault’s second electric vehicle inspired by one of the brand’s iconic cars to be released as part of the so called ‘Renaulution’ strategy.

The concept has clear design traits borrowed from the classic 4. These include the wide horizontal grille featuring the round, built-in lamps, now with Matrix LED lights. While the recognisable pill-shaped rear lights have also been entirely redesigned, they remain readily recognisable and are a clear nod to the old 4L. The rear three-quarter windows are another design taken from the past.

At 4.06m long, the new 4 is smaller than most superminis, and is powered by a 139BHP electric motor and a 42kWh battery
