Audi has just pulled the wraps off its new A2, with the popular name set to return to the market imminently. 

Lots of people have fond memories of the bold little city car that Audi used to sell, but the new A2 is bigger and more electric than you ever remembered. But it does still have that reassuringly swoopy roofline. 

The first-generation version of the car was an innovative car that pushed the boundaries in terms of its lightweight aluminium construction and relentless focus on efficiency. But it was very expensive to make and not enough people bought one. 

Will the new one match up to the high bar set by the original? Spoiler alert: probably not, but Audi is talking a lot about efficiency, so fingers crossed. 

When will the new Audi A2 go on sale?

It’s going to be available to order from October, with UK deliveries starting in early 2027. 

How much will the Audi A2 cost?

The A2 is going to start from £32,200 in its entry level guise, but we haven’t had the rest of the UK pricing and specs confirmed yet, so keep watching here. 

What is the Audi A2's range?

We’re also not quite sure about this either, because Audi keeps changing its mind. The range on UK-spec A2s will likely be different, but headline range is up to 401 miles in 231hp/79kWh guise (see below in two paragraphs). 

We know that the new Audi A2 shares its underbits with the new Volkswagen ID.3 Neo, but this is reinforced by the fact that the powertrain and battery lineup is almost identical. 

The cars are all rear-wheel drive, single motor jobs, and you can choose from a 170hp/50kWh entry model (262 miles), 190hp/58kWh combo (320 miles) and a 231hp/79kWh (401 miles… and all usable battery sizes) pairing just like the ID.3. 

The Audi throws in a bonus power package, with a 326hp/79kWh (391 miles) option that seems to go against the efficiency element of the A2’s USP, but Audi drivers do need to be able to power up the outside lane.

That last one also gets a top speed boost from 99mph to 124mph. 

Crucially, the efficiency figure quoted almost across the range is around 4.5m/kWh, which is very encouraging. 

How fast will the Audi A2 charge?

Maximum charging speeds are different depending on the battery size – the 50kWh one will juice up at 100kW, the 58kWh battery at 105kW and the larger 79kWh unit at a perkier 183kW.

What does the new Audi A2 look like?

It looks very much like a car design student jazzed up the original A2, with big wheels and a drawn-with-felt-tips sort of vibe. We kind of like it, but it’ll be different when it’s wearing solid blue paint and parked in Sainsbury’s. 

What technology does the Audi A2 have?

There’s a load of safety kit as standard (no four star Euro NCAP tests here then, we hope), plus some fancy optional stuff like surround view parking cameras with 3D modelling and a parking system that you can train to park itself in a particular spot.

Audi has also kindly integrated Microsoft Outlook and Teams into the car as part of its ‘Audi connected work’ package, taking away the one excuse you have left for avoiding work “Sorry, I’m in the car, call you back later?”

An interesting innovation in the A2 is the introduction of ‘Fidlock’ fasteners around the cabin – it’s a bit like the YouClip stuff you get in Dacias or Skoda’s Simply Clever bits and pieces, but as well as Audi-designed accessories, this system can incorporate third party products because it’s an independent invention.

How big is the Audi A2?

We don’t have this information yet either, but let’s put in the VW ID.3’s dimensions and see how they’re different once Audi confirms the numbers. 

The ID.3 is 4,265mm long, 2,070mm wide (with mirrors) and 1,554mm tall. 

How big is the boot on the Audi A2?

It is 396 litres seats up, expanding to 1,336 litres with the seats down. Almost exactly the same as the ID.3 Neo, a touch smaller than the Nissan Leaf seats up, bigger seats down. It’s a solid chunk bigger than the Volvo EX30’s space. 

What platform does the Audi A2 use?

The A2 is built on the same MEB platform as a load of other Volkswagen Group cars – the ID.3 Neo, obviously, but also the Audi Q4 e-tron, Cupra Born, Skoda Enyaq and even the Ford Capri and Explorer models. 

What cars will rival the Audi A2?

We’ve been having lots of discussions about this, it’s a difficult car to pin down – you’d definitely consider it against the ID.3 Neo if you could save a bit of money, but those four rings are a strong draw. 

What else will you be looking at? The Volvo EX30, Mini Aceman, BMW iX1 perhaps. A Nissan Leaf or a Megane E-Tech if you’re looking at family cars…
