Ford has unveiled a prototype robotic charging station as it aims to open-up the world of electric motoring to those with reduced mobility.

Developed in partnership with Dortmund University, the station can be operated via a smartphone from inside the vehicle. This allows disabled drivers, those with mobility issues and older people to simply stay in their car while the robot does all the hard work.

Ford believes the new technology could remove a barrier to electric car ownership for anyone who needs assistance with charging a vehicle. It envisages a future where robotic charging stations are installed at disabled parking spaces, in car parks or at private homes.

The technology is currently undergoing real-world testing before being further developed in collaboration with charging network provider IONITY.

Rival Volkswagen has previously revealed a concept for a mobile robot charger which can move between cars and plug in while they are parked.
