​MG is all set to introduce a surprise new electric supermini at the Goodwood Festival of Speed at the beginning of July. 

The car will officially be introduced as a concept, but it is set to go on sale in the UK in 2027. 

The new electric supermini would sit in the same segment as the Chinese/British carmaker’s MG3 model, a small hatchback that comes with petrol and hybrid powertrain options. 

That car has only been on sale since 2024, however, so it’s unlikely that the Goodwood concept will wear the same badge unless MG plans on following the same route as the MG4 and have two generations of the same car being sold side by side. 

​The MG4 has been on sale since 2022, and has been one of MG’s most successful models in the UK, but the second-generation car arrived in the UK in 2026 and despite the broad similarities has been badged ‘MG4 Urban’. 

MG’s Chinese owner SAIC doesn’t have anything homegrown it can deploy to the UK – recent launches have been rebadged IM and Roewe efforts – although the Binguo electric supermini from its Wuling joint venture with General Motors has been rebadged as an MG in certain markets. 

So we could end up with either an MG2 or an MG3 Urban on our hands, likely using similar battery setups to the MG4 Urban (above) – that car has a Standard Range option with a 41.9kWh battery or a Long Range option with a 52.8kWh battery. Though having said that a price conscious, city bound supermini might not even need the longer range option. 

At any rate, more (though probably not all) will be revealed at Goodwood on 9 July when MG will be unveiling the new supermini plus an “aspirational” concept car that will also be joining the company’s range at a later date.
