Mini’s Countryman has become the latest new electric model on the market to be granted access to the hallowed realm of Band 1 status for the government’s plug-in grant.
The announcement of the Countryman being awarded the maximum £3,750 grant comes at the same time as a selection of Renaults were also awarded the full discount. Nissan's new Leaf EV was awarded the full discount a couple of weeks ago.
The electric car grant was reintroduced in July 2025 after a previous iteration ran for two years from March 2020. Both schemes followed campaigns from the car industry and others calling for help for buyers who were being put off switching to electric vehicles by the high relative prices to petrol and diesel models.
The current version of the electric car grant offers two levels of subsidy – £1,500 for Band 2 cars, which are the majority of EVs that fit the eligibility criteria, and £3,750 for Band 1 cars that meet more stringent environmental and other criteria, which haven’t been fully explained by the government. It is believed that the Countryman Electric qualifies for the full amount because both the car and its batteries are produced at a single site in Leipzig in east Germany. Around 500 of the Mini models a day have been rolling off the production lines at BMW’s Plant Leipzig since the end of 2024.
The whole of the Countryman range falls within the scope of the electric car grant, despite the £37,000 limit for eligibility. The rules allow for cars to be considered for the grant as long as part of the same family of models sit below the £37k limit.
The Countryman Electric Sport SE model has an RRP of £39,495, which means it will be covered by the grant, but buyers will have to be careful not to spec it so that the extra equipment takes it over the £42k limit. Happy buying!
