Toyota's legendary Hilux has made the switch to electric power, with the Japanese brand also confirming hydrogen fuel-cell power is on the cards for the brand new ninth-generation car.
The Japanese brand says the new EV version has been designed to deliver zero-emissions driving 'without sacrificing any of the model’s renowned quality, durability and reliability'.
Arriving next year, the new version retains earlier models' body-on-frame construction, and for this generation has specific protection for the battery from damage and water ingress. Toyota has even ensured that the new Hilux EV has the same wadding depth as the outgoing diesel version.

Powering the electric Hilux is a 59.2Wh battery, which, Toyota claims, can deliver up to 150 miles before needing to be topped up. It has a payload of 715kg and 1,600kg towing capacity. Toyota has also promised ‘best-in-class’ charge times, but so far hasn’t revealed any further details.
Inside, there's a completely overhauled interior, featuring a pair of 12.3-inch screen and wireless smartphone charging. A more complete range of safety systems has been added, too, including Emergency Driving Stop and Low Speed Acceleration Suppression.
Coming in 2028 will be a hydrogen fuel-cell-powered model, but no further details have been revealed, including whether it will be offered in the UK.
The EV model will sit alongside a mild-hybrid diesel when it launches officially in 2026. Full specifications and pricing will be revealed later.
