Plugging in a cable to charge a car could be a thing of the past for owners of future electric Porsches, as the German carmaker will soon be rolling out inductive wireless charging.
The soon-to-be-revealed new Cayenne Electric – which Electrifying.com has already got behind the wheel of – will be the first Porsche to be optionally available with the system. Porsche is the first car manufacturer to bring the tech to market, which uses a similar process for charging that’s already available for smartphones.
Set to be debuted at next week's Munich Motor Show, the 11kW system uses a floor pad that can be installed in a garage, carport or open-air parking space, and is connected to mains electricity. It measures 117cm long, 78cm wide and 6cm high.

A plate located underneath the car and between the front wheels allows the car to charge wirelessly; when charging, the Cayenne lowers automatically to within a few centimetres of the pad.
Called 'Porsche Wireless Charging', the system can be integrated into the My Porsche app, while a special view in the Surround View parking function makes it easier to steer the Cayenne to the optimal charging position. Once the parking brake is engaged, charging begins automatically.
Porsche Wireless Charging will launch in Europe next year, with the Cayenne being the first Porsche to be optionally equipped with the system.
