The Porsche Cayenne Electric can now be ordered with the company’s innovative wireless charging setup, or Porsche Wireless Charging as the German carmaker calls it. 

The system uses a permanently installed ground pad that’s connected to your household electricity supply, another pad on the bottom of the car and assorted other electronics within the car that interface with the battery.

Porsche says that the ground pad is weatherproof and can be installed outside. The wireless charging system will run at up to 11kW and the company says that it is 90% efficient, which is on par with charging your car from a home installed wall box. 

Safety concerns often come up in relation to wirelessly charging an EV, but Porsche says that there are integrated safety systems including motion sensors that cut the process if movement is detected around the pads, and foreign object detection capability. 

If a metallic object were to sit between the two pads while charging was in process it would heat up significantly, but the Cayenne Electric will stop charging if that’s the case says Porsche. 

Porsche Wireless Charging is now available to order in the UK as well as other European markets. Shame really that it wasn't available in time for Nicola to get some juice while she enjoyed the view below.

The preparation on the car for the system comes as standard, but the charging pad on the underside of the Cayenne Electric is a £1,322 option when you order your car, although Porsche says that the system can be retrofitted through a dealer.

The ground pad will be available to order as an aftermarket accessory, but isn’t showing as available in Porsche UK’s online shop just yet. 

It’s understood that the ground pad will cost £5,355 and that installation can be arranged through Porsche’s ‘preferred charging partner’, Andersen. 

In other exciting Porsche Cayenne Electric developments, the company has also announced that paint-to-sample colours are now available on the car, as are upgraded massage seats plus electric opening and closing doors.
