Renault’s £140,000 'mini-supercar' might be more affordable than you think

As a fangirl of both Lego and the Renault 5, I’m happy to support the campaign to get a Lego Renault 5 Turbo 3E made into an official model.

This one-off of Renault’s £140,000 electric 'mini-supercar' in brick form was built by UK engineer Dave Collins, known as @devonbricks on Instagram, using around 1,200 pieces and quite frankly it puts my Lego skills to shame.

Electrifying.com is now backing a campaign to turn a passion project into a production reality so that more of us can enjoy the 555hp, all-electric Renault 5 Turbo 3E – albeit in model form.

The model captures the details of this fabulously over the top production car – bold bodywork, oversized skirts, and dramatic rear wing extensions which give it an unmistakably 1980s look.

Even in Lego form you can’t miss the carbon fibre splitter, rear diffuser, and vast wheel arches, all of which is the result of around a hundred hours of work.

The fan built model has now been submitted to the Lego Ideas platform but needs 10,000 supporters to progress to the next stage, where it could be selected for production as an official Lego set.

Collins, an engineer from Newton Abbot in Devon, began creating his own Lego designs during lockdown in 2020, driven by a passion for precision and problem-solving.

“I had Lego and Technic as a kid, and as an engineer I have an inherent need to design, and love getting details right,” he said.

“Angular cars are easier to do in Lego, so the Renault 5 Turbo 3E was a natural choice. Plus it looks great, and it’s immediately recognisable as an update of the eighties classic. I’ve certainly tried to race a few off the lights in my youth.”

Renault is urging fans of the brand, the original Renault 5, the new electric Renault 5 and Lego itself to get behind the project and help make it happen – and we’ve already signed up.

To support Dave and help bring the Lego model to life, supporters must first sign up for a free Lego account, and then place their vote by visiting Dave’s creator page.
