Need a plug? The UK has just passed 120,000 EV charge points

The latest numbers from the plug mapping service Zapmap show that the UK passed 120,000 electric charge points at the end of April, with over 1,300 new plugs being added to the network during the month.

Zapmap says that the number represents an 11 percent rise compared with April 2025’s numbers. The 120,000th plug in the UK was apparently a 22kW AC charger installed by Raw Charging at Lydford Gorge in Devon, a National Trust site with a waterfall (4.8 stars out of 5 on Google Maps).

Another milestone passed in April was the number of charging hubs in the country, which Zapmap says is defined as eight or more rapid or ultra-rapid chargers in one place. There are now more than 1,000 such locations.

Local councils across the UK are investing in slower chargers for residential areas in order to help EV drivers who don’t have off-street parking at home, but it’s actually ultra-rapid chargers that are the fastest growing charger type according to the figures.

Ultra-rapid chargers are units that can charge up at 150kW or more, and there were 40 percent more of them at the end of April compared with the same time last year, which is over 13,300 ultra-rapid charge points in total.

The charging network will still have to work hard to keep pace with new EV sales – the latest numbers from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders released this week showed that more than 39,000 new EVs were sold in April, and that the UK hit two million total EVs sold during the month.
