It's not just a car, it's a memory-maker. The Renault 4 and I have left London!

I think cars are a bit like songs… You know how a certain song can instantly transport you back to a moment… A feeling, a chapter of your life? I think cars can do exactly the same.
For me, the Renault 4 will always be the car that drove me out of London. As a born-and-bred Londoner, leaving the city after many years has brought every emotion imaginable. Excitement. Terror. Relief. Sadness. Hope. Probably all within the same five minutes.
As we packed up the third and final van, my husband climbed into the family car, and I jumped into the Renault 4 - our brand-new station runner.

Were there tears? Absolutely. Were they happy tears? I’m still not entirely sure. But somehow this little car became a symbol of new beginnings.
Until now, we’ve only ever really needed one family car. Living in London, work usually meant trains, tubes and the occasional taxi. Suddenly we’re a two-car household (which still feels very grown up), and with three kids to ferry around the Renault 4 has slotted into family life brilliantly. We rarely travel five-up, so it’s the perfect second car, and the front ISOFIX points are game changer. Squashing three car seats in a middle row is not fun for anybody!
It’s also proving to be ideal for this slightly chaotic in-between stage of life. We’re renting for three months before moving into our new house, so no home charger yet, meaning it’s surviving entirely on public charging (although I genuinely can’t wait to install my very first home charger… my definition of adulting).

And the car itself? Honestly, I’m a bit smitten. Two weeks in and it’s become my first choice every single time. It looks like it should be a cheeky little hot hatch, but it isn’t trying too hard. The power delivery is smooth rather than over-the-top, the suspension is comfortable without feeling floaty, it’s easy to place on narrow roads, ridiculously simple to park and has just enough fun about it to make every journey enjoyable.
It’s got character. It makes me smile. And hopefully it gives the new neighbours the impression we’ve still got a tiny bit of street cred… It also has plenty of real-world range, and is managing over 200 miles on a single charge in fairly mild weather. That's reassuring when your nearest charger isn’t on your driveway.
Next week we’re off to Norfolk… and as much as I’d love to take the Renault 4, there is one slight problem. The 420-litre boot is perfectly adequate… until you remember we’re a family of five.
It’ll comfortably fit my suitcase. Just mine.
Which has got me thinking… Maybe the answer is a romantic weekend away. Just me… and my Renault 4. It might be the most relaxing holiday I’ve had in years.
