Audi has revealed a new performance-oriented plug-in hybrid version of its Audi A5, called the RS5, which comes with a 177hp electric motor and 22kWh usable battery.
This is the third generation of RS5, only the latest version of the A5 that was introduced in 2024 is an amalgamation of the A4 and A5 models. There have been four previous RS4-badged cars since that model range was introduced in 1994. The new RS5 is the first one that Audi has put on sale with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
The electric motor has been paired with a 2.9-litre twin turbo V6 petrol engine, and although the powertrain has been oriented more towards perky performance figures, Audi says that the car can still travel for around 50 miles on electric power alone.

The battery cells have been integrated in the floor of the RS5’s boot, and three-phase power means that the Audi can charge at up to 11kW, meaning it can be charged to full from empty in 2.5 hours.
Audi says it has installed an upgrade to its infotainment system that will give the driver a readout on performance figures and lap times if they’re on a track, as well as more useful information like energy flows between the engine and battery.

There are over 50 new electric models coming to market in 2026, but there’s still plenty of action at the plug-in hybrid end of the swimming pool – we’ve counted over 10 new plug-in hybrids coming this year, with more seemingly being announced every month.
If you’re looking for more electric range than the Audi RS5 offers, then the recently launched Geely Starray EM-i Super Hybrid PHEV is rated at up to 84 miles of WLTP electric range, though it is a touch slower than the RS5 if you’re into that sort of thing.
All very moody inside the new Audi RS5, but there are plenty of screens to keep you distracted on the move too
