Everything we know about the Hyundai IONIQ 2

We know that Hyundai isn’t a brand to hang about; it’s always bringing out exciting new models, often in really cool, modern-retro styling. Now, the Korean brand is cooking up a dinky electric hatch that will be called the IONIQ 2, and it’s aiming squarely at the new Renault 4 and VW’s upcoming ID 2X. That puts it above the brilliant little Hyundai Inster, in the model lineup, and below the Hyundai Kona Electric.

Now, this isn’t just a random addition to the line-up. Hyundai’s already snapping at the heels of its Kia sibling in Europe — they sold 265,680 cars in the first half of 2025, only about eight thousand behind Kia — and this little number could help them close the gap.

What will the Hyundai IONIQ 2 look like?

Well, er, we don’t know yet. The Hyundai IONIQ 2 has been spotted out testing, wearing some natty disguises, but we haven’t seen it yet. You don’t have long to wait, though, as the IONIQ 2 will be revealed at the 2025 Munich motor show in early September.

We’re certainly expecting it to carry on the ‘pixel’ design language that has been so successful on Hyundai models like the IONIQ 5 and Inster, possibly with a bit more of the IONIQ 6’s shark-nose styling.

It’ll likely to be a high-riding, five-door hatchback of just over 4.0-metres in length; perfect to take on the Renault 4, Ford Puma Gen-E, BYD Atto 2 and forthcoming Kia EV2 and VW ID2.X.

What range will the Hyundai IONIQ 2 have?

The IONIQ 2 will share a lot under the skin with the Kia EV2 that we’ll also see revealed in the near future. It’ll sit on the same modular E-GMP platform as pretty much all Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis EVs, and while there are no official details yet confirmed about the IONIQ 2, we’d expect it to get the 58.3kWh lithium-ion NMC battery that’s used in the Kia EV3. That would give the IONIQ 2 a WLTP range of roughly 270 miles, making it one of the longest range electric cars in the class.

Whether Hyundai would also offer the 81.4kWh battery for the IONIQ 2, for an official driving range of well over 350 miles, is unknown. We’d say that sticking with the smaller battery and a lower price point will make more sense for this compact hatchback and crossover class.

Expect the IONIQ 2 to get the same front-wheel drive layout as the Kia EV3 – it may even share the same 201bhp electric motor.

How much will the IONIQ 2 cost, and when can I buy one?

We’ll see the new Hyundai IONIQ 2 when it’s revealed at the 2025 Munich motor show this September. Sales are expected to start in autumn 2026 – probably a few months after its sister car and chief rival, the Kia EV2.

As for pricing? Well, we expect the Hyundai IONIQ 2 to cost from around £28,000, with top-spec models coming in at roughly £33,000.
