MFG has announced its third price rise for electric vehicle charging this year, with the cost per kWh at its network of rapid chargers going up to 79p from 1st November 2022.

In an email to customers, the company said: “The Energy Bill Relief Scheme announced in September does not result in ‘capped’ wholesale costs, and we are continuing to see significant cost pressure. We unfortunately must pass some of these costs through to consumers. As and when our costs decrease, we look forward to passing these savings on.

“We also join other CPOs in calling for a reduction in the VAT rate for public charging to 5%, equal to home charging. All reductions in VAT will be immediately passed to customers in full.”

The company increased the charge from 39p to 49p per kWh at the end of February this year and then again to 65p in August.

The latest increase means that a Volkswagen ID.3 58kWh driver topping up from 10-80% charge will be paying £32, up from around £16 at the beginning of the year.

Motor Fuel Group (MFG) is the UK’s largest independent forecourt operator with over 900 sites. It has already installed electric chargers at 108 of its forecourts – the highest number in the independent sector.

The news comes as rival Osprey announces it is cut prices from £1/kWh to 79p in response to the energy price cap.
