MG has officially confirmed that it is bringing China’s second-generation MG4 to the UK and will be badging it the MG4 Urban.
The new car will feature a smaller range of batteries than the current MG4, which is set to benefit from an interior upgrade, and will start from a lower price too, with the MG4 Urban lineup beginning at £23,495. We like the existing car because it's a great all-rounder, perfect for people who are new to EVs.
There will be three models in the MG4 Urban range – Comfort Standard Range, Comfort Long Range and Premium Long Range. The trims go up in £2k increments until the top spec car comes in at £27,995.
The revised MG4 range will knock out the Standard Range car, which means the new Premium Long Range trim will start that lineup at £29,995. Despite the MG4 getting a new interior, that model will be £2,750 cheaper than the outgoing version.
The Premium Extended Range model will offer 338 miles of range for £32,995, a range to price ratio beaten only by the Citroen e-C5 Aircross’s 421 miles for £32,935. Though we imagine that when we get to see the MG’s spec it will beat the entry level Citroen in terms of kit.
The MG4 Urban is being sold as the second generation version of the MG4 in the company’s Chinese home market – it not only looks different, with softer styling, but it’s based on an entirely new platform underneath and has made the switch to front-wheel drive versus the current MG4’s rear-wheel drive setup.
Electrifying first reported on the new car when the Euro NCAP crash test results gave away the launch of the MG4 Urban ahead of schedule. We don't know precisely when the MG4 Urban and revised MG4 will go on sale, but we can expect more details in the next couple of weeks.
It'll be business as usual when we see the new MG4 – the changes are mostly on the inside
