Tesla has announced a new entry model to its Model Y line-up that has knocked £3k off the starting price of the Texas-based carmaker’s electric MPV.

The new Model Y Standard replaces the Rear-Wheel Drive car and starts the range at £41,990. The range is now split into three sections – Standard, Premium and Performance.

The other trims keep the same names and prices, with the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive model the next up at £48,990, an all-wheel drive model adding £3k to that and the Performance car topping out the range at £61,990.

Tesla says that its focus is on “making sustainable transport more affordable” – Model Y sales have declined year on year in the UK, but the model remains the bestselling electric car on the market with over 20,000 of them sold so far in 2025. The range was given a facelift earlier in 2025, but the car has been on sale since 2020.

The Model Y Standard has been tweaked for the UK market to achieve a lower insurance group rating of 34. Tesla says it’s managed this by lowering the top speed and slowing down acceleration. On the plus side, the car now comes with 19in wheels as standard, so it’ll look cooler going slower.

Tesla says that the Standard is the most efficient Model Y yet, rated at 4.5 mile per kWh and a WLTP range of 314 miles. Tesla doesn’t publicise its battery sizes, but the car is estimated to have a usable capacity of around 60kWh.

The price cut for the Model Y will make it an even more compelling addition to our list of EVs with the biggest boots…
