The sensible Toyota Corolla could go electric in the future if pictures of a new concept car are anything to go by.
The Japanese carmaker has released a series of images of upcoming concept cars that will be revealed at this month's Tokyo Motor Show, and one of them wears a Corolla badge.
The teaser pictures feature a dramatically styled saloon car, and a stark contrast to today's current Corolla. Judging by the charging port on the front wing, it'll be a plug-in hybrid or a full-electric – and our money is on the latter.
While Toyota has long advocated for hybrids – of which the current British-built Corolla is one – it is starting to expand its range beyond the bZ4X SUV. An electric Corolla would give Toyota a direct rival for the Kia EV4, Volkswagen ID.3 and Vauxhall Astra Electric.

The concept car shares very little in appearance with the current Corolla, featuring a far sleeker design, flush door handles and a neat spoiler. These features are clearly designed to make the car as aerodynamic as possible – again, another hint that it has a full-electric powertrain.
Further details of the Corolla Concept car will be revealed at the Tokyo Motor Show, which opens its doors on October 30.
