You know the old saying about waiting ages for a bus and then four come at once?
Well it’s sort of like that with the new Volkswagen ID.Cross, except we’ve seen it four times in various states of prototype and sneaky preview and only just had the chance to see the production version of the new small electric SUV.

This is the car that finally completes the Volkswagen Group quartet that share the same base – Cupra Raval, Skoda Epiq, Volkswagen ID.Polo and the ID.Cross. Just in time for headquarters to start ditching models all over the place.
Headline news on the new ID.Cross is that it looks great, and has actual buttons inside. Loads of them, all over the place. Well, a smattering of them beneath the infotainment touchscreen.
Nicola has been to have a look at the new car because she’s seen it so many times that she’s the world’s greatest living expert on the new ID.Cross. And she spent much of her time playing with the retro features on the infotainment that allow you to party like it’s 1979.

Other exciting features include the 475-litre boot (even bigger than on the concept car), less exciting features include the 37kWh battery (good for 194 miles/312km of WLTP range) or 52kWh battery (271 miles/436km WLTP) options. Headline grabbing? By no means, but more than enough for everyday use, and crucially a smidge longer than you’ll get from the Ford Puma or Mini Aceman models that will rival the ID.Cross.
The new Volkswagen has already gone on sale in Germany, but we know how they love to get their reservations in early over there, the little scamps. It’s costing from €27,995 (£23,900) in Germany. Suppose we’ll get UK prices when the ID.Cross is available for order over here. Deliveries will start later this year…
