Volkswagen has finally revealed the production-ready ID.Polo – its long-awaited electric supermini. Here’s everything you need to know, from specs and expected price to what it looks like. Our editor-in-chief Ginny Buckley has been to Germany to get a first look at it - read our full review here.
Effectively the production version of the ID.2all concept, the ID.Polo is set to become one of the brand’s most important EVs – bringing electric driving to a much more affordable price point - once UK prices are confirmed it could end up costing around £22,000 and it may also qualify for the UK government electric car grant.
The ID.Polo will sit below Volkswagen’s existing electric models as a more affordable alternative, targeting the same space as petrol superminis like the Polo and Ford Fiesta once did.
The new car comes with three power levels (116hp, 135hp and 211hp), two battery sizes (37kWh LFP for the two lesser powerful models and 52kWh NMC for the most powerful motor) and a range of up to 280 miles.

The latest version of the Polo comes with an impressive 441-litre boot, which Volkswagen says is 25% larger than can be found in the petrol car. Yet another reason to go electric. Seats down there’s 1,240 litres of space (versus 1,125 in the fossil fuel burner).
Design-wise, Volkswagen describes the ID.Polo has having a “likeable front end and a powerful rear”, which is what we all aspire to. The rear door handles are squirrelled away to give you something to laugh at when your friends or children try to get in. Overall though the car continues the crisp lines that we've become used to from the Polo.
The interior is notable not just for the sharp 13in touchscreen infotainment screen that has a retro display mode that channels the spirit of a decade or four ago if you’re feeling nostalgic but for the other retro nod – buttons.

Volkswagen has turned back some of the less exciting modern developments in cabin design to reintroduce a bit of usability to the car. Some are shortcuts, some are directly functional, but the dashboard buttons match up with VW’s latest steering wheel, which has also ditched the touch sensitive surfaces for a bit of clicky goodness.
The new ID.Polo also comes with V2L capability to power electrics off the car if you feel the urge, and Volkswagen has already announced that there’s a GTI version on the way.

The ID.Polo is already available for pre-order in Germany at €33,795 for a mid-range Life-spec car with the most powerful motor and the big battery. A base model at €24,995 will go on sale in a couple of months – there’s no word yet on prices for the UK or when the car will be available, but keep an eye on Electrifying for all the latest news on that front.
