For every family driver, the safety of your loved ones is going to be your number one priority. So when buying a car, you’ll be looking carefully to make sure it has all the features you need to keep them protected.
Your safety is MG’s number one priority too, which is why the company strives to be at the cutting edge of technology, and aims to prove it by securing the highest possible safety ratings from the independent assessors at Euro NCAP.
Take the new MGS5 EV. It has just been awarded a 5 Star rating with the family-size, all electric SUV excelling in both adult and child occupant safety tests. It was also commended for the many features designed to protect the occupants and other road users.
For example, the MGS5 EV scored 90% in the stringent crash tests for Adult Occupant Protection, 82% for Child Occupant Protection, 82% in Vulnerable Road Users and 78% in Safety Assist.
All models include seven airbags: front, side, curtain, and a central bag between the seats. These, combined with a reinforced steel chassis, provide impressive passive safety for all occupants should an accident occur.
But the tests prove the MGS5 EV isn’t just strong if the worst should happen – the car has clever electronics to try and prevent collisions from happening in the first place.
These advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are pooled together in a package called MG Pilot, which covers key areas such as Collision Avoidance, Lane Safety, Cruise Control features and Driving Assistance features including active emergency braking and blind spot detection.
Acknowledging that some drivers have different preferences for assistance systems, the MGS5 EV features the MG Pilot Custom option, enabling the settings to be quickly and easily customised and then preferred settings stored. These are easily accessible in the menu and can be reconfigured with new preferences if the driver wishes.

The MGS5 EV also includes protection against ‘dooring’ where a door is suddenly opened in the path of a cyclist approaching from behind. Smaller parking knocks are prevented too, with the 360° HD Surround View Camera available on the Trophy Long Range model. Four wide-angle cameras reveal a full ‘bird’s eye’ view of what's around the car, while ultrasonic sensors alert you to obstructions. At higher speeds, a car’s braking performance is crucial to accident prevention, so the MGS5 EV features an advanced braking system developed in partnership with Continental and Bridgestone. The upgraded system on the Trophy version is capable of braking from 62mph to a stop in an impressive 35.5-metres, outperforming most rivals.
The MGS5 EV’s NCAP top rating maintains MG’s impressive performance when it comes to these independently verified safety standards. The MG HS and MG4 EV also hold 5 Star Euro NCAP scores.
Euro NCAP Programme Director, Aled Williams, said: “Euro NCAP continues to push manufacturers to strive for the highest levels of safety, and it is rewarding that MG have responded so positively, with excellent performance across all areas of occupant and partner protection.”
Since 1997, Euro NCAP has been setting the standard for car safety across Europe, and has now spread around the world. Its ratings give drivers clear, easy-to-understand guidance when picking a new car, and help push carmakers to include more life-saving tech.
