Tom loves a bargain, which is why the Grandland has caught his eye recently. Is there a catch to the low prices? He's running one for a few months to find out.

When I was previously running a Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer, I said it was the best value electric car you could find, as long as you were financing it using a lease. But I have bad news – the days of bargain Astras are over, for now at least. Look through the lease pages and, if anything, they look a bit pricey compared to other cars. But there is a new big bargain, and it is even better value – the Vauxhall Grandland.
How much of a bargain? Well, I know of people who are paying less than £200 per month for a mid-spec example with 5,000 miles per year on the contract. That’s less than some medicore hatchbacks for a huge family-size SUV.
Even if you are an exception to all the rules and pay cash, the Grandland prices start at £35,455 after the grant – that’s about the same as a top-spec Fiat 500e.As I love a bargain I’m going to be trying one out for a few months to see it there’s a catch.
BT74YWV is a top-spec Ultimate model, despite the embroidered seats suggesting it is a lesser GS. That means it has an interesting choice of kit. If you want a full low down then the Vauxhall website will give you the long list, but there are some highlights, such as the clever ‘Intelli-Lux’ headlamps and a full size sunroof, which opens at the front. That’s a rarity these days, and I have used it for a bit of fresh air now and again.
It also has my favourite feature on any Vauxhall – the AGR seats. These have 10 different adjustments and are designed to keep back ache at bay. Unusually for a top spec car like this, the seats have to be adjusted manually. And I love this. If you swap cars between people regularly and the other drivers are different heights it can take ages to wind the seat back electrically. It seems even longer if it’s raining while you are waiting for enough space to squeeze behind the steering wheel.
I love the copper paint too. It’s a refreshing change from all the grey and black cars out there and reminds me of newly-minted coins and Duracell batteries.
Talking of which, I’ll be doing some long journeys soon to test the claimed 318 mile range - I'll let you know how I'm getting on.
