Everything we know about the MGS6 EV

MG is planning a major model spree, from smaller cars to posher ones with its recently-launched upmarket IM name, and Electrifying.com has recently detailed all the predicted upcoming models.

But the Chinese-owned British brand hasn't forgotten about the bread-and-butter mid-sized family electric SUV segment, and plans to launch a new model to rival the likes of the Volkswagen ID.4, Renault Scenic E-Tech and Nissan Ariya.

Expected to be called the MGS6 EV, it could arrive in UK showrooms as soon as late next year. Here's everything we know about it so far.

What will the MGS6 EV look like?

Official patent images filed by parent firm SAIC Motor show a general SUV shape that's similar to the smaller MGS5 EV (pictured below) revealed earlier this year. However, in keeping with its higher positioning within the model range, the proportions appear to be larger to better compete with other mid-sized SUV models like the Volkswagen ID.4. The front-end also is expected to have more MG4-like styling compared to the MGS5 EV's rounded design, with a sharper, more angled bonnet and front bumper.

What range will the MGS6 EV have?

MG won't be revealing the battery sizes and official WLTP-tested range just yet, saving that for the car's debut. But, judging by the desire to position the SUV above the MGS5 EV and to rival models like the Volkswagen ID.4 and Renault Scenic E-Tech, the MGS6 EV will likely use a larger battery than the MGS5 EV's 64kWh pack.

Considering MG already uses a 77kWh pack for the MG4 Extended Range hatchback, this could be a readymade option for the MGS6 EV. If MG chose this option, a WLTP range comfortably exceeding 300 miles, potentially rivaling the Skoda Enyaq’s 356-mile range. Judging by MG's reputation for value for money, that smaller 64kWh could also be offered to allow MG to offer the MGS6 EV with a lower entry price compared to rivals.

What will the MGS6 EV's rivals be?

MG has positioned the MGS6 EV squarely in mid-size electric SUV territory — battling the likes of the Volkswagen ID.4, Skoda Enyaq, Renault Scenic E-Tech, and Nissan Ariya. This sector is becoming increasingly heated, so the MGS6 EV will also be counting the Ford Explorer and recently revealed Kia EV5 as rivals, too.

How much will the MGS6 EV cost, and when can I buy one?

Although MG hasn’t confirmed a UK launch price yet, it's likely the MGS6 EV will slot between the MGS5 EV and the posher IM6 SUV. So, you can expect a starting price of under £35,000 pricing to around £40,000. A 2027 launch is most likely, but judging by MG's habit for rolling out quickly, don't be surprised if it arrives sooner.
