It’s back! Tesla brings back the indicator stalk (and adds 30 miles to range)

Tesla has announced a series of upgrades for the Model 3, including the return of the indicator stalk – and battery improvements that boost the WLTP range by up to 30 miles.

The return of the stalk comes two years after it was deleted as part of the 2023 ‘Highland’ update of the Model 3 – a move which proved divisive. Signalling was instead operated by small touch-sensitive buttons on the steering wheel – which many drivers found less intuitive than the conventional and familiar indicator stalk. This was especially true in the UK and Europe, which has more roundabouts than Tesla’s native US.

Tesla has described the new part as “a new precision-engineered indicator stalk which ensures effortless control while driving.” Basically, it's the same as the indicator stalk that we've already seen on the new Tesla Model Y

Upgraded battery packs with higher-density cells are now fitted, improving the range figures for all Model 3s. The Rear-Wheel Drive now offers 323 miles of official WLTP range with 19” wheels, up from 318 miles previously. The Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive has the biggest improvement, rising to 466 miles WLTP with 18” wheels, up from 436 miles WLTP previously.

All-Wheel Drive versions have smaller improvements but are still impressive, with the LR AWD now offering 445 miles WLTP with 18” wheels, up from 421 miles previously, while the Performance has 355 miles, up from 328 miles.

There is also a new front camera available, located in the nose of the car. It offers drivers an expanded view of the surroundings on the centre screen and Will enhance the car’s camera-based safety systems. It even gets its own washer jet and integrated heating to prevent fogging  and keep it clean in all weather conditions.

Changes to the Model Y are not so extensive, however the Long Range All-Wheel Drive version also gets upgraded battery packs with higher-density cells. This means it can now offer 390 miles of WLTP range when on 19-inch wheels or 372 miles WLTP on 20s, up from 364 miles and 353 miles respectively.

Prices of all the cars remain unchanged. Tesla sales have been suffering in the UK this year, due to a backlash against CEO Elon Musk and an onslaught of new competitors.
