Porsche Taycan upgraded with fake gearshifts, pretend rev counter and a new simulated engine noise

The Porsche Taycan might have been on sale since 2020, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t any improvements left to be made – the German carmaker has revealed some tweaks to the electric range.

And what is the exciting big change that Porsche is introducing this late in the game? Yes, that’s right, the fake gearshifts we’ve all been asking for.

Porsche says that its goal was “enhancing the emotive driving experience of all Taycan models”, which means a new fake engine sound, a pretend digital rev counter and “noticeable shift jerks”.

So far, so Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, and even that car will be the first to admit that it’s a little bit gimmicky. Still, Porsche has got some other improvements up its sleeve, right?

Ah, there we go – the car on your digital dashboard display will now match your real car’s colour. There’s an upgraded satnav, improved AI voice commands and ooh, a magnetic ring mount in the phone charger to stop your mobile flying off round corners. Smart.

There are new optional summer tyres with a particularly low rolling resistance that add up to 12 miles of range, according to Porsche, that’s exciting. It means the entry car with rear-wheel drive now does 435 miles of WLTP range thanks to the standard fit 97kWh battery. You do have to upgrade from 19in to 20in wheels though, which is over £1k.

We can’t tell you if the prices have been affected yet because Porsche has taken them all off the website, but that’s never a good sign is it?

And if money is no object and you’re going for the fastest Taycan of them all, the Turbo GT, you’re now able to get the car with the factory fit version of the Manthey kit that was fitted to the Taycan that recently set a super speedy record lap at the Nürburgring.

Manthey is a famous racing team that’s associated with the German brand and helped it come up with some performance improvements for its ‘Ring lap time. It’s not just a chunkier body kit that Porsche is throwing in, either – you get modifications to the chassis and powertrain to make the car extra quick.

You can order the upgraded Taycans from Porsche dealerships now, but don’t forget to ask them how much the cars are first.

You too can drive like Lars Kern on his record breaking Nürburgring lap with the updated Taycan Turbo GT. We wouldn't recommend it though
