Tesla has brought back the seven seat option on its big-selling Model Y, for the first time since the car was given a facelift last year. 

Available exclusively on the Premium Long Range All-Wheel Drive version, the option is now available to order in the UK costing £54,490 – an extra £2,500 over the five-seater model . It will also cost you a few miles of range, with the WLTP official total dropping from 391 to 372 miles.

The price puts it slightly above the big battery version of the Peugeot e-5008, head on with the new Skoda Peaq and undercuts the bigger Kia EV9 and Hyundai IONIQ9.

As with the previous Model Ys, the configuration introduces a third row with two forward-facing, fold-flat seats. Access to the back is easy thanks to ingress buttons on the backrest of each second-row outboard seat. When pressed, the second row slides forward and folds, allowing easier step-in and step-out for the rearmost passengers. 

The seven-seater still offers a claimed 381 litres of luggage space behind the third row, which is only slightly smaller than a Volkswagen ID.3’s entire boot. When the third row is folded flat, 894 litres are available. There is also 116 litres of storage under the bonnet and the maximum space with everything folded is 2,094 litres. 

Second-row passengers get an 8-inch touchscreen for entertainment, gaming, and additional cabin controls. With Bluetooth compatibility, they can pair individual headsets to watch videos. Third row passengers don’t get a screen but can keep devices charged with two USB-C outlets.

It will be built at Tesla Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg for the UK and Ireland markets, with customer deliveries beginning in May. The new model forms part of a slimmed down Tesla range since the Model S and Model X were dropped from the lineup in January.
