Polo fans will have been counting down the days until the most exciting new electric VW hatchback launch of the month gets fully underway, but for the rest of us there’s the news that orders for the ID.Polo have officially opened. 

Well, sort of – orders for the Launch Edition versions of the car have opened, with the rest of the range opening up in September. 

There are three cars to choose from – the Life Launch Edition with 37kWh LFP or 52kWh NMC atteries nestled inside and the Style Launch Edition with 52kWh battery. 

The 37kWh Life starts proceedings from £25,555, the bigger battery adds just over £3k and the Style model is £32,995. The 52kWh cars are all eligible for the Band 2 electric car grant from the UK government, which means £1,500 off. 

These early launch cars get better spec (which you’d hope for, because they’re more expensive than the standard cars that will be on order in September) – the Life models are upgraded with dual-zone aircon and heated front seats and steering wheel (calm down Volkswagen, don’t go crazy). 

Meanwhile the Style Launch Edition has a panoramic sunroof, massage front seats, better parking cameras and some extra safety kit. All that will be cruelly wrested away in a couple of months, but you’ll save £500 at least. 

What will the proper production cars cost in September, you ask? Well, there will be a 116hp Life model that starts from £23,945 (not quite the £22k electric car we were promised, VW...), with the 135hp version costing £25,055 – those are the teeny battery ones. 

The 52kWh Life will cost £28,330, then there will be a Style 37kWh at £28,470 and a 52kWh version at £31,745. 

Amazing how Volkswagen can make a two trim line-up seem complicated. It’s almost like the whole lot needs to be rationalised and made sensible.
