Spot the difference – Volkswagen's tweaked its Multivan people carrier

Volkswagen has teased a newly facelifted version of its Multivan MPV that’s set to be revealed in full later this year.

The current version of the stalwart people carrier is the seventh generation Multivan and has been on sale since in 2022, so it’s due a few upgrades to keep things fresh.

Careful not to blink, though, otherwise you might miss the styling upgrades – these are mostly concentrated around the front bumper area, with the bumper and grille now visually divided into two elements. The headlights have been subtly tweaked, with the full width light bar still present, but a new LED signature created within the lamp that gives the Multivan a bit more presence.

There are also new wheel rims and paint colour options to choose from, says Volkswagen, but the company has teased us with the promise of more updates to the Multivan to be announced over the summer before the new version is properly launched in the second half of the year.

What else can we expect to see? Perhaps some more exterior design tweaks (we haven’t seen the back of the Multivan yet – something to look forward to), interior upgrades would be most welcome, in the form of improved infotainment or a boost to practicality, and an increase in the range offered by the plug-in hybrid versions of the Multivan would also keep it competitive. An update in 2025 boosted e-range to 59 miles from a 19.7kWh battery.

Until recently the Multivan was designed and built as a passenger version of Volkswagen’s Transporter van, but in 2024 Volkswagen introduced an all new version of the Transporter that shared its underpinnings with Ford’s Transit Custom in a joint deal.

The Transporter comes with both plug-in hybrid and fully electric drivetrain options, but it’s unlikely that the Multivan will add an electric version any time soon, because the ID.Buzz is fulfilling most of the company’s requirements for a people carrying EV.

The Multivan is of course bigger and fancier than the ID.Buzz, so any electric version would take the MPV firmly into Mercedes-Benz VLE territory.

This is what the Volkswagen Multivan currently looks like – can you spot the changes?
