Heads could be rolling, even if they’re only ones that belong to some of the older test dummies on the team – a seven-seat MG PHEV that hadn't even been announced yet has been revealed in the latest batch of crash test results from the Euro NCAP safety organisation.

The MGS9 is a sharp looking new plug-in hybrid seven seater, currently sold in China as the Roewe RX9 and in Australia as the MG QS. The car is currently only offered with a 2.0-litre 4cyl turbo petrol engine, but on its Euro NCAP crash video the MGS9 – as well as having its new name revealed – has been outed as a plug-in hybrid.

The only other PHEV that MG currently has on sale in the UK is the HS SUV, which pairs a 1.5-litre turbo petrol with a 24.7kWh battery to offer a respectable 75 miles of electric only range. No word from MG yet what the MGS9 might be capable of until they’ve finished sweeping the bits up. MG also recently revealed the new MGS6 EV that's arriving in 2026.

The MGS9 is advertised in Australia has have three full rows of seats, rather than being a 5+2 for occasional rear passengers. Let’s hope that the practicality of those rear seats survive the addition of batteries into the car, because decent plug-in hybrid and electric seven-seaters are few and far between.

Key rivals for the MGS9 include the Kia Sorento and Peugeot 5008 PHEVs, as well as diverse electric contenders like the Kia EV9, Mercedes EQB and Peugeot 5008 (again).

In the meantime, MG can be pleased that its new seven-seater SUV has scored the full five stars for its Euro NCAP crash test, as well as 84% for adult occupants, 85% for child occupants and 74% for vulnerable road users.
