There is plenty to like about the EO Mini Pro 3 but the main attraction for most buyers is almost certainly going to be its size and the ability to link to British Gas' Hive home networks - and get a load of free charging in the process.
The satin-finished black box is the same size as an A5 notepad (230mm x 151mm) which means it’s not going to blight the front of your house, and it has a single LED indicator lamp so it won’t be too obvious at night either.
It’s far from flat however, sticking out from the wall by 125mm. The tapered shape means it’s perfect for wrapping a cable around though.
The standard format is untethered, with the socket at the front. There is a tethered cable option too, but at the time of writing this was inexplicably expensive, costing an extra £220 on top of the £599 price for a 5 metre lead.
As there is no screen on the unit itself, all the Mini Pro 3’s functions are controlled via an app. It lets you review your charging history, monitor energy usage, and start and stop EV charging sessions from your smartphone. It connects to the EO using a Wi-Fi network, via Bluetooth straight to your phone or using an optional mobile data SIM card where there is no Wi-Fi.
The EO also comes with charger comes with CT clamps as standard, so you can charge your car from your solar panels.

The Hive/EO Mini Pro 3 is compact and simple, with subtle looks which won’t upset the neighbours. The app is no-nonsense too, and it’s a charger which just gets on with the job. It appears to be only available through Hive, which is part of British Gas. That means the energy company will pay back 100% of your charging costs for your first year up to 8,000 miles when you link it to a tariff. It can only charge at a maximum of 7kW too, so is no good at properties with three-phase power.
