Volkswagen has thrown all its engineering might into creating its first dedicated electric car and hopes the ID.3 will bring electric power to the people. The mid-spec 58kWh battery version looks to be the best all-rounder.

Nicki Says

“Let's forget about the teething troubles Volkswagen had with the ID.3. That's history now and the current cars are finally living up to the hype Volkswagen built up. The range looks great, and even the screen usability has improved a lot. A 77kWh model would suit me just fine.”

Ginny Says

“The first electric car I drove was a VW CityStromer back in ‘98, and I've had a fascination with electric Volkswagens since then. The ID.3 is a great package and I'm glad Volkswagen built this as a family hatchback rather than a big SUV. The range is brilliant, it's well priced and there really is a version to suit all tastes and budgets. ”

Got questions? We've put together the most frequently-asked topics below. If there's something we haven't answered here or in the review then let us know on our contact page

Is the Volkswagen ID.3 fully electric?

Yes, there are no petrol of hybrid versions - this is a pure electric car.

Will there be other Volkswagen ID.3 models available?

There are two battery size options, and a decent range of trims and option packs. This is expected to remain the same, with no sign of a hot, performance variant just yet.

Is the VW ID.3 a good buy - have the early problems been fixed?

We'd say so. On the evidence of the test cars we've driven, the early issues with the infotainment system have been sorted and the quality appears first-rate. If you're buying used and can stretch to the post-2023 facelifted car, it's worth it for the updates to the quality, infotainment and efficiency.

What else should I consider?

The electric hatchback market is growing fast. When the ID.3 was launched in 2020, the Nissan LEAF was about its only real rival. Now, with cars like the Citroen eC4, MG4 and Cupra Born (which is based on the ID.3) the competition is a lot stronger.

Will the Volkswagen ID.3 replace the Golf?

Eventually. The Golf is still a huge seller for Volkswagen globally and will continue to be sold in markets where electric car adoption is slower. Volkswagen will focus more on its electric ranges as it transitions into its next phase.
