Ginny Says

“The MG4 is a popular car amongst first-time EV buyers, and the same goes in the used market. It’s a nice car to drive, it’s spacious inside, offers good driving ranges, and is very keenly priced.”

Vicky Says

“Reading MG4 owners’ forums is a little worrying as it seems as though the car does suffer its fair share of problems. But with so many MG4s out there on the market, you can afford to be picky to find the right car.”

The MG4 put the Chinese-owned British brand into the electric car market in a big way. It has become a very popular choice which is great news if you’re considering one used as there are loads available. Reliability isn’t the best, however, so be picky when choosing.

  • Pros:Great range, fun to drive, well equipped
  • Cons:Patchy reliability record, fiddly infotainment

Introduction

MG has been responsible for turning many Brits into EV owners thanks to excellent value-for-money models such as the ZS EV and MG5. But it's with the MG4 where it has arguably hit the jackpot as it's become a hugely popular model thanks to its blend of sharp design, long EV driving ranges, excellent performance, and high equipment levels.

Those are the MG4's strong selling points when it comes to buying one new, but what about used? Well, essentially, all those plus points remain but with the added benefits of keener pricing. One glance at the Electrifying.com Used Car section proves that an MG4 can be snapped up for not much cash at all, suggesting that just like with brand new models, used MG4s could be perfect for those looking for a practical five-door electric hatchback on a budget.

No car is without its faults, and sadly that seems especially true of the MG4. Despite it being a relatively new car, industry reliability surveys don't rank it very well, while owners' forums are home to a bevy of complaints.

However, the Electrifying team knows of some owners who haven't had any cause for complaining. So, if you're interested in buying a used MG4, it's worth not going for the first car you see and doing your research. With there being plenty of MG4s on the used market, finding the right car for you shouldn't be too hard, though.

In this guide we take a look at what to look for and which model is right for you.

What’s the real-world range of a used MG4?

The MG4 launched in 2022 and the Chinese-owned British brand hasn't been tweaking the model line-up much by adding or removing models. So, choosing the right car for you shouldn't be too much of an ordeal.

It originally arrived with two battery sizes and two trims. Entry-level SE, or 'Standard Range', cars came (and continue to come) with a 51kWh LFP pack, giving a claimed range of 217 miles. Meanwhile, buyers of the 64kWh NMC 'Long Range' could expect a WLTP-tested range of up to 281 miles, depending on spec. It puts the MG4 in step favourably with rivals like the Volkswagen ID.3, for example.

See the pros and cons of NMC and LFP batteries

In 2023, MG expanded the line by adding a longer range model plus a sportier XPower version. The latter uses the 64kWh battery pack of the Long Range model, but features twin motors to deliver 429bhp – although this is at the cost of range, with MG claiming 238 miles on a full charge. The Extended Range, meanwhile, saw a larger 77kWh NMC battery pack added to the model line-up, allowing the MG4 to travel up to 323 miles, claims MG.

In May 2025, MG gave its batteries some tweaks to liberate more range. All packs, apart from the 51kW, saw marginal gains – the 64kWh Long Range now covers 288 miles, the Trophy Long Range 279 miles, Trophy Extended Range 329 miles, and the XPower 248 miles.

Those are the figures MG quotes – naturally, in the real world, the range you actually achieve will be lower and dependent on a number of factors. We'd expect around 190 miles from the smaller 51kWh battery in normal driving, around 250 miles from the 64kWh Long Range, and around 280 miles from the Extended Range. The hot XPower is harder to predict due to its battery-sapping high performance, but we would think around 200 miles would be a reasonable average. Of course, the types of journeys you take plus traffic, use of the car's climate control, driving style and the weather will all have an effect on the actual range you achieve between top-ups.

In terms of charging capability, the 51kWh version can accept a rapid DC charge at speeds of up to 117kW or 135kW with the 64kWh Long Range. The XPower can accept 142kW and the 77kWh Extended Range can accept 144kW.

It's generally regarded that EV batteries lose between 1-2% of their usable capacity every year, and that of course reduces the range in between charges. Unlike some petrol and diesel cars, newer high-mileage cars can be better buys than older models that have fewer miles on their odometers. But how the car has been used by its previous owners will have a big impact on what you can expect from the battery during your ownership. If a car has been rapid-charged at motorway services all of its life, then battery degradation will be higher than a car that has primarily been charged at slower speeds at home.

How long will the battery on the MG4 last?

As the MG4 is relatively new, most used MG4s in the marketplace have low to average mileage, so acquiring data to see how long that car's battery will last isn't the easiest. On the Electrifying.com Used Car listings pages, there are a handful of MG4s in the market with between 40,000 and 80,000 miles on their clocks.

MG4 forums reveal some pretty happy owners who say that degradation is exactly what they would expect. So, 4% degradation in the first 50,000 miles (giving a 96% SoC battery) is normal, with that degradation curve flattening over the next 50,000 miles and another 2-3% drop.

As already mentioned, the way the car has been charged by previous owners will affect the battery’s health. Cars that have been regularly charged at home or between 20-to-80% at fast chargers will have better battery health than cars that have been fast charged to 100% regularly.

How reliable is a used MG4 and what are the common problems?

The MG4 has pretty patchy reliability, with some owners complaining about a litany of problems, while others feel it’s generally a reliable EV. What seems to be more of an area of concern, however, is MG's dealer experience. The British brand has been found at the bottom end of industry-leading reliability surveys, with dealers not offering the level of service that customers expect. This could be worth bearing in mind when choosing your used MG4.

  • Charging issues – often AC charging errors, but also charging port lights can fail
  • Flimsy interior trim, with gear selector malfunctions
  • Poor paintwork and panel gaps are common
  • Glitchy infotainment screen and driver's display screen 12-volt battery can lose charge quickly
  • The XPower seem to have an annoying vibration at motorway speeds. This is normal and doesn’t mean anything is broken

Which is the best version to buy?

MG didn't scrimp on equipment levels with the MG4. All models come with a decent level of kit as standard, such as LED front and rear headlights, a seven-inch digital driver's display, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, rear parking sensors, 17-inch alloys, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto phone connectivity, and a host of safety systems. For most buyers, it will come down to which size of battery best suits them.

Having said that, if you crave heated seats and a steering wheel in the winter (we do), these only come on the Trophy and XPower models. The same goes for remote preconditioning with only the Trophy and XPower getting this handy feature. A heat pump, however, has never been available to UK buyers, not even as an option.

How long is the warranty?

The MG4 is covered by a seven-year/80,000-mile warranty from the day it was first registered. The battery warranty is for eight years and 100,000 miles.

What are the ownership and running costs of a MG4?

Running costs will change depending on the size of the battery pack and drivetrain fitted to the MG4. For the 51kWh battery, an overnight charge should cost just over £14 (using average electricity rates at time of publication), rising to £20 for the 77kWh Extended Range. This is for an average home tariff – an EV-specific tariff with a cheap overnight rate will see these figures slashed. A 20-80% top-up at a rapid charger (average tariff of 79p) should be around £60 for the 77kWh car, and less for the smaller battery models.

The MG4 sits in insurance groups 27 to 29 which is on par with its rivals such as the Volkswagen ID.3 and Renault Megane E-Tech Electric. The MG4 XPower sits in insurance group 33.

In terms of tyres, one major UK motor factors quotes £136 for each tyre for a 64kWh Long Range MG4.The

What other cars should I consider?

Just like when buying new, there's plenty of choice when it comes to buying a used MG4. There are plenty of alternatives in the electric hatchback class, with two of the most obvious being the Volkswagen ID.3 and Cupra Born twins. The MG4 is well matched to the ID.3, but offers better value for money even when second-hand. The Born gives a more sporting feel, and while the MG4 XPower blows the Cupra away in terms of sheer grunt, the Born has a nicer, more engaged-feeling driving experience.

You could also look at the Peugeot E-208 and Vauxhall Corsa Electric but both offer less interior space, and the Renault Zoe is cheaper. In fact, other than the Zoe, not much beats the MG4 for second-hand value for money.
