Best Large Family Electric Car: Kia EV9

Kia’s success story in Europe is remarkable. The brand has gone from being a budget choice to a front runner which can take on the best – and win.

It’s not just the mainstream marques which have to worry, as Kia is pinching customers from the prestige German brands too, especially in the electric car market. We know from readers that they have cars like the EV6 on the same shopping list as BMWs, Audis and Jaguars.

But the biggest test of Kia’s new premium status is the EV9 - a vast, seven-seat, long range SUV that has Land Rover, Audi and Mercedes in its sights.

And we reckon it has hit the bullseye. For a start, the styling of the EV9 is bold enough to make rivals look boring and old fashioned. Many of the striking design elements have been carried over from the 2021 concept car.

Inside, there’s a modern and spacious feel, helped by a flat floor. In the seven seat option the third row has enough room for teenagers and has good sized windows, proving that travelling in the back can still be a first class experience.

And then there’s the hardware. In terms of range, Kia claims a WLTP figure of 349 miles for the Long Range and 313 for the AWD. The EV9 comes with standard Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, and there is innovative  Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) compatibility to sell electricity back to the grid.

The Kia also runs an 800 volt electrical system, which means it can charge far faster than almost all its rivals. It enables you to add around 60 miles of range into your battery in just six minutes using a super-fast 350 kW charger.

Bold styling, rewarding driving dynamics, plenty of space in all seats and a winning combination of interior flexibility means this EV9 becomes a serious competitor for cars as diverse as the VW ID.Buzz and the Mercedes EQS SUV. We think the EV9 is worth the high price tag and deserves to be named our Best Large Electric Family Car.

Founder and CEO of Electrifying.com Ginny Buckley said:

“There’s a lot for families to love about the EV9. It seats up to seven, is enjoyable to drive and it can go the distance in it between charges. But what impressed us most was the quality of its interior which is well equipped, comfortable and spacious, while that third row of seats proves that traveling at the back can still be a first-class experience.”
