Electrifying Efficiency Award: Vauxhall Astra
It’s not often we are really surprised by a car at Electrifying.com. We’ve also become a little cynical when it comes to the official range figures – we know that they will be less in the real world and we all factor it in before planning a big journey.
But the new Vauxhall Astra Electric shocked us in the best way – by being the most efficient EV we’ve ever driven.
Over a 200+ mile journey on a mild spring day it managed to eke out more than five miles from every kWh of energy in its battery. That’s remarkable, especially since we weren’t really trying and only checked the figure at the end of the journey.
There are reasons behind this achievement. The Astra uses a newly-developed battery and motor combination which are more efficient. This means the battery can be made smaller and lighter, while still giving the same range as rivals - 258-miles, in fact.
An energy-saving heat pump is also fitted as standard and it has smaller wheels than the competition.
It means you’ll spend less time and money charging and it will use less of the world’s resources at every stage of its life, from production through to recycling. We think that deserves some recognition – so the Vauxhall Astra is the first recipient of the Electrifying Efficiency Award.
