Electrifying.com New Car Awards 2024
Best Money Saving Electric Car: MG4

As we sit down to judge these awards, there are just three cars available to order which cost less than £30,000. Just three. That’s even few than last year, as the price of models such as the Renault Zoe and MINI have crept up.

There are a few more on the way, such as the Citroen e-C3 and the entry-level BYD Dolphin, but until they arrive the EV buyer on a sub-£30k budget has the choice of the tiny Fiat 500e, the aged Nissan Leaf or the MG4.

It’s that MG which looks the best value by far. It’s bang-up-to-date family hatchback with a range of up to 281 miles and fast recharging too.

The cheapest model costs £26,995, which is actually £1,495 less than the cheapest Ford Focus with a petrol engine.

That model has the smaller battery with an official range figure of 217 miles. That should be enough to keep most motorists happy, but if you want more then the SE will manage 281 miles and it will charge faster than most rivals, with a maximum 135kW speed. That’s more than some cars costing half as much again.

There’s plenty of space for a family, a surprising amount of equipment and it’s good fun to drive too. With a claimed 4.4 miles from every kWh of power it is pretty economical, servicing is good value and MGs are covered by a seven-year warranty.

We don’t think there is a better value electric car currently on sale.

“We don’t think there is a better value electric car currently on sale than the MG4 and it’s a car that makes switching to electric for the first time easy. It’s a distinctive hatchback packed with driving fun, there’s enough space for a family, impressive range and fast charging - while it costs less than electric rivals and can even beat petrol models on price.”
