Small Family Electric Car of the Year: Volvo EX-30​

If you’re looking for an electric car with the practicality you need for a small family, we reckon the Volvo EX30 is unbeatable.

For a start it’s affordable, with a starting price which puts it up against superminis. When the full range arrives the entry level car will start at around £31,000, which means the EX30 will undercut the Vauxhall Mokka by more than £5,000 and is just over £1000 cheaper than the mid-range Corsa.

If you want a bit more range or performance for when the kids aren’t on board, you can have that too. The £41,000 Twin Motor Performance Plus has a daft 424bhp and can get from 0-60 in a supercar-rivaling 3.6 seconds. 

It’s the Single Motor Extended Range Plus, weighing in at £38,545, which is our recommendation though. It’s got that larger 69kWh battery which is good for up to 275 miles of range, and it still has a surprising turn of speed – the 0-60mph dash takes 5.1 seconds. It’s actually a little nicer to drive than the twin motor too. 

There are clever features to make family life easier, like the removable rear storage box. They have even helpfully put the dimensions of the luggage space on the boot lid so you can see if that Ikea box is going to fit before you get to the car park. 

But the EX30 has also been designed with sustainability in mind, and I know your kids will think that’s a crucial feature in any car you buy.

It all adds up to make the Volvo EX30 the Electrifying Best Small Family car for 2023.
