Electrifying Car of the Year - Volvo EX30​

Our Car of the Year for 2023 goes to a model which caused a real stir when it was first revealed. 

Pictures showed it looked smart and the all-important figures for performance, range and efficiency all stacked up, but the biggest shock to us all was the price. This is a good-looking mini SUV from a more premium brand and it will go head to head on cost with superminis from the mainstream marques.

The Volvo EX30 has a starting price of £34,795 and a cheaper model is on the way, making it cheaper than rivals such as the Vauxhall Mokka. 

If you want more range or performance, that’s available too, with a twin motor version offering 424bhp. We think it’s better to just spend your extra cash on a bigger battery though, with the £38,545 Single Motor Extended Range Plus being the sweet spot in the EX30 line up. 

It still has as much performance as you need, drives a little better and the larger 69kWh battery gives up to 275 miles of range. 

The pared-back interior takes some acclimatisation, but there’s a good sustainability story behind the design and materials used, and effective voice activation takes the place of switches for many functions.

There are clever features to make family life easier too, such as a removable rear storage box and a decent sized boot. 

Competitively priced, decently equipped and with all the design qualities we’ve come to expect from Volvo, it’s a thoroughly engaging product. The Volvo EX30 is the Electrifying.com Car of the Year for 2023.
