Used Car of the Year: Tesla Model 3
We’re big fans of the Tesla Model 3 as a brand-new car and, with a growing secondhand market making the most affordable Tesla even more affordable, it’s also our pick of the best used electric cars out there.
All versions of the Model 3 come with great range, performance and superb safety and with prices starting at around £20,000 - the same as a new petrol supermini - pre-loved versions offer an impressive and advanced alternative to established premium saloons.
Even entry-level cars offer 300 miles of range, while long-range versions are capable of up to 374 miles between top-ups. When you do need to charge, the Model 3 has some of the fastest charging speeds around, and even used examples get access to Tesla’s extensive and ultra-rapid Supercharger network.
In its quickest guise, the Model 3 can embarrass a Ferrari or Lamborghini from a standstill but every version offers plentiful performance, along with top-class safety specifications. The Model 3 gained some of the highest scores ever in Euro NCAP testing, thanks to its excellent protection in impacts and clever technology which could help you avoid a crash in the first place.
Tech is also at the heart of the welcoming cabin, where the huge central screen controls virtually every function and is kept constantly up-to-date with new and improved features, plus some hilariously childish ones. The lack of buttons or knobs means there is plenty of space, making the cabin feel light and modern, yet there are lots of practical storage spots dotted around, along with heaps of charging options for device addicts.
The Model 3’s combination of technology, range, safety and performance is still among the best in the business and with plenty of great value secondhand options available it’s easy to recommend as our Used Electric Car of the Year.
